Sottoguda is one of Italy’s Most Beautiful Villages, a small village at the foot of the Marmolada where time seems to pass more slowly. Strolling through its streets, you’ll come across ancient stone houses, the characteristic tabiéi – the traditional Ladin wooden barns – fountains, courtyards and views that tell the story of the mountain and the people who have lived there.
Here, life still retains the rhythm of small mountain villages. Each season offers a different atmosphere: spring brings the reawakening of nature, summer brings the village to life with events and walks, autumn envelops it in the colours of the foliage, and winter transforms it into a quiet and evocative place at the foot of the Marmolada.
Sottoguda is also a village where ancient craft traditions live on. Strolling through its streets, you can discover the work of the woodcraft artisans at Artigianlegno Marmolada and Gioielli Deem, and the wrought-iron creations of La Fosina– testaments to trades that still help to keep the village’s identity alive today.

The Serrai di Sottogudaare a spectacular natural gorge carved out over the centuries by the waters of the Pettorina stream, at the foot of the Marmolada. Walking amongst the high rock faces, listening to the sound of the water and admiring the waterfalls and the play of light means immersing yourself in one of the most evocative corners of the Dolomites.
Every season offers a different experience. In summer, the Serrai provide a cool retreat and a pleasant walk surrounded by nature; in winter, when the path is open and conditions allow, the ice transforms the gorge into a spectacular scene.
Our accommodation is situated just 100 metres from the entrance to the Serrai, allowing you to reach them easily on foot and enjoy them at the quietest times of the day.
As with all activities in the area, we’ll be happy to advise you on the best time to visit and provide up-to-date information on trail conditions.
Just a few minutes from the centre of Sottoguda lies a splendid beech forest crossed by the Via della Meditazione, a circular trail surrounded by nature, ideal for those who wish to walk at a leisurely pace and rediscover the tranquillity of the woods.
Amidst beech, fir and larch trees, the trail offers glimpses of the Marmolada and invites you to slow your pace. In autumn, the woodland is ablaze with shades of yellow, orange and red, offering one of the most evocative views in the area.
Along the route, you’ll come across animals carved from wood, a small wayside shrine and several spots where you can stop to listen to nature. It’s an easy walk, suitable for most people, and perfect for those who want to experience the mountains in an authentic way.
